Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Police say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.

Officers then located multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Police report initial examinations suggest the fluid was likely human blood.

"There is still no indication as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.

City officials said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.

A high-ranking political figure stated the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.

"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing attack five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in 2020.
