The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
